Maastricht, Nederland Maastricht University Voltijd

Wat ga je doen?

What are your resonsibilities?

The Maastricht University Medical Center+ (MUMC+) and Maastricht University (UM) are looking for a professor of experimental pain medicine. If you want to contribute to high-quality basic and translational research to better recognize and treat chronic pain, respond to this vacancy now

You will work within the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at MUMC+. You will conduct research within the experimental pain laboratory of the Mental Health and Neuroscience (MHeNs) Research Institute at UM. In addition to research, you will also engage in educational activities for UM and management activities.

Research

As a Professor of Experimental Pain Medicine, you will be at the forefront of our translational neuroscience research. Starting from a clinical diagnosis and current treatment options, we formulate fundamental questions. Based on these research questions, basic neuroscience research is conducted, and the results are translated back to the clinic.

Currently, the research focuses on three domains:

  1. Neuromodulation (particularly spinal cord stimulation) in chronic neuropathic pain.
  2. Development of bio-based drug delivery for chronic pain.
  3. Prediction and treatment of chronic postoperative pain.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Strengthening and expanding translational research within at least one of the aforementioned domains.
  • Leading the experimental pain medicine laboratory of the "Translational Neuroscience" division of the MHeNs research institute, closely collaborating with other researchers from FHML and colleagues from the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN), for example, within the Center for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN).
  • Funding acquisition for new research.
  • Strengthening the national and international character of experimental pain medicine by expanding collaboration with clinical partners, other universities, and industry.
  • Shaping biotechnological research on chronic low back pain within the SPINE center in collaboration with the Departments of Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Rehabilitation, and the MERLN research institute.

Education

One of the ambitions of our department is to expand the role of anesthesiology and pain medicine by serving as a bridge between clinical and preclinical subjects. As a Professor of Experimental Pain Medicine:

  • You contribute to education in the training of medical students, students of other health-related disciplines, anesthesiologists, and pain specialists.
  • You supervise PhD students during their doctoral research.
  • You mentor postdocs and clinical researchers in their University (senior lecturer) trajectory (UHD trajectory).
  • You contribute to the establishment/participation of relevant master's programs at the FHML and FPN faculties of Maastricht University.

Wat vragen wij van jou?

Job Requirements

We are looking for someone with expertise in the field of medical biology, neuroscience, medicine, and/or a related field. Additionally, you have international research experience, as evidenced by scientific publications in reputable journals, funding acquisition, memberships in international scientific bodies, and invitations as a speaker at international conferences. Even more importantly, we are looking for someone with a vision to reduce the gap between diagnosis and treatment of pain management.

You also possess:

  • Leadership qualities to lead our research lines and guide scientists.
  • Persuasive ability to attract new academics and research grants.
  • Proven experience in successfully supervising PhD students.
  • Knowledge and willingness to participate in administrative activities within MUMC+ and UM.
  • Teaching experience to improve existing educational systems. You also have a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or international equivalent.
  • Collaborative skills to represent MUMC+ at conferences and with our collaboration partners.
  • Proficiency in the English language, both spoken and written.

In addition to research aimed at gaining new insights, it also includes research whose results can be directly translated into concrete applications and innovations. The execution of the various research programs is organized in our eight research institutes.

Chronic pain is a clinical and societal problem. Many people struggle with pain that can be medically classified as chronic neuropathic pain, low back pain, painful diabetic polyneuropathy, cancer pain, and peri or postoperative pain. Often, it is challenging to diagnose these pain complaints as well as to develop an effective treatment plan. Therefore, the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine focuses on translational neuroscience research, aiming at diagnostics, treatment, and basic experimental research.
