University of Twente - PhD Researcher Position
We are looking for a full-time PhD researcher interested in granular physics, computer modeling, and Machine Learning techniques to join the University of Twente in the Netherlands. This role involves working on a cutting-edge high-performance multi-phase material point method for modeling submarine landslides.
Background and Aim:
- Submarine landslides involve the movement of saturated sediments down a slope, interacting with seawater and offshore infrastructure.
- The doctoral candidate will implement constitutive models for saturated sediments in fluid- and solid-like states into an existing GPU-MPM code.
- Momentum, mass, and energy exchange between different states of sediments will be achieved with overlapping subdomains.
- Machine learning surrogates will be used to improve computational efficiency in predicting landslide dynamics.
Objectives:
i) Extend an existing MPM code to multi-phase systems.
ii) Develop a reduced-order model using machine learning.
iii) Perform simulations and assess landslide impacts on offshore infrastructures.
iv) Calibrate model parameters using experimental data.
Expected Results:
- A novel multi-phase GPU-based MPM code with clear documentation.
- Benchmark cases validated using experimental data.
Planned Secondments:
- Dr. Michele Larcher (Free University of Bolzano): Perform experiments on slope collapse.
- Dr. Xue Zhang (University of Liverpool): Improve parallelization of the MPM code.
Your Profile
- Obtained an MSc degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with numerical methods and multi-phase materials.
- Sound programming skills in C/C++, Fortran, Python, or equivalent.
- Excellent teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills.
