Every day, you make use of technology that contains microchips. From smartphones and laptops to cars and airplanes. Technologies such as AI, robotic process automation and 5G will fuel the growth of the semiconductor industry even more. Since ASML is a worldwide leader in high-end lithography systems for the semi-conductor industry, there’s a huge demand for our machines.

Optics is at the heart of everything we do at ASML. We have multiple opportunities for engineers or researchers with an optical background. Within optics there are multiple Departments or groups for which you could be selected for:

  • Research

  • EUV and DUV

  • Sensors / Light department

Research

Research is responsible for bringing creative ideas / concepts to technical solutions, ready for product development, enabling extension of Moore’s law and driving ASML’s long-term growth in semiconductor industry. It identifies gaps in lithography solutions and technology roadmaps, develops new technology competencies, solutions and ‘proofs of concept’, and transfers viable results to Development & Engineering and System Engineering.

Within Research Metrology, there are currently three optical groups, responsible for all new optical sensor concepts, new designs and optical (measurement) systems and the light sources technologies:

  • Optical Measurement Systems

  • Optical & Soft X-Ray Metrology (OSXR)

  • Light Sources.

Most of the ASML researchers have PhDs in science, and many join the company directly after graduation.

DUV

Within ASML, D&E DUV is responsible for the specification and development of ASML DUV products. The Twinscan DUV Optical Column department is responsible for development of optical systems that are used for projection of IC-design layers onto the wafer. The department is divided into multiple groups each of which works in its own specialist subsystem / area.

EUV:

To enable further innovation in chip manufacturing, we developed a next-generation EUV platform that increases the numerical aperture (NA) from 0.33 to 0.55 (‘High NA’). The platform, called ‘EXE’, has a novel optics design and significantly faster wafer and reticle stages.

Mechatronic and Measurement Systems

Within Mechatronic and Measurement Systems (MMS). D&E sector, the Light Sources, Level Sensors and Image Sensor Departments are responsible for the definition, realization and qualification of various critical light sources and major measurement sensors and its application in all ASML products. The Sensors and Light Sources groups deliver all functionality related to the optical sensors used during the exposure of a wafer in the ASML machines, and the light sources are being used in various sensors within ASML products. We are one of the most vital Departments in ASML, because the technology we develop enables us to continuously improve our key business drivers of overlay, imaging, focus and throughput. The Cluster is responsible for the physical and optical design of these light sources and sensors for EUV and DUV machines.

Role and Responsibilities

ASML builds lithography systems that can place multiple layers on a chip with very high precision.

You will contribute to the research and/ or development of leading-edge light sources for optical systems by designing, creating, integrating and testing within the restrictions imposed by system specifications and planning considerations, enabling Moore’s Law.

As Design Engineer or Researcher - Optics,

You will create new designs and optical (measurement) systems that will become future ASML products. This includes scouting for new sensor and measurement technologies, creating concepts and designs, creating test setups and proto-tools and evaluating different solution directions.

Education and experience

Technical University, MSc or PhD in physics or engineering with a strong focus on optics.

The preferred Design Engineer or Researcher - Optics is a candidate with:

  • PhD or Masters’s degree in an optics related topic and 3-5 years of experience in academia or industry
  • Proven experience with optics; preferably experienced with optical simulation tools.
  • Preferably experience with lasers and/or plasma light sources.
  • Solid background on design of experiments, data analysis and presentation.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with data analysis using MATLAB or Python.
