We are looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer within the Opto Mechanics Illumination team in our Mechanical Development department at ASML. This team is involved in designing and positioning the optical modules in the light path of our DUV machines. Our Lead Engineers translate specifications into a working design, both in new product development and for our existing product line.

To accomplish this, they work closely together with many disciplines inside and outside ASML. Therefore we expect our Lead Engineers to be not only technical knowledgeable, but also strong communicators and motivators.

Role and Responsibilities

The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of specific mechanical functions, he/she is working together with the architect, team lead and (jr) designers, to enable reliable, stable, safe, contamination free, cost effective and easy to manufacture/service products.

You are working within a multidisciplinary project, steering one or more designers in your team. You interface cross project with Lead Engineers, Architects and System Engineers from many different disciplines.

Working on the design of one or more products, creating designs with a small team of mechanical experts in project setting. Continuously improving quality of mechanical design is a main requirement.

  • Specifies and designs modules and related parts supporting different (sub)systems.
  • Is a technical leader to define the solution and guide several engineers as well as managing supplier feedback.
  • Is responsible to apply the correct mechanical construction principles.
  • Realizes the qualification of the design by contributing to the specification of various tests.
  • Designs and realizes tests and appliances and is responsible for ensuring that prototypes are built, and tests are carried out.
  • Is responsible for high quality technical product documentation and design implementation towards manufacturing and field service.
Education and experience
  • Bachelors or masters in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of relevant working experience in leading a design team in a complex technical environment.
  • Expert knowledge of mechanical engineering is a must.
  • Skilled in technical, correct and effective communication with suppliers and (internal) customers.
  • Highly effective in 3D CAD modeling (preferable UG/NX).
  • Knowledge of precision engineering, ergonomics, dynamics, mechatronics, mechanics, high precision adjustment, position and fixation solutions is preferred.

Context of the position

Within ASML, the sector Development & Engineering (D&E) is responsible for the specification, design and engineering of the ASML products. The cluster Mechanical Development is designing, building and testing mechanical systems and sub-systems which are fitted into the end products. In this cluster, Departments with different competences are responsible for the various modules of the ASML products. Each department consists of discipline and/or function-oriented groups where emphasis lies on particular competences or functions in ASML equipment.
