AlpInvest is a leading global private equity investor with over $84 billion of assets under management as per September 30, 2024. Approximately 80% of these funds are invested in private equity funds globally, including secondary transactions, with the remainder invested directly in companies as a co-investor (equity and mezzanine) in Europe, North America and non-traditional markets. Secondary & Portfolio Finance Investments Team Overview
The Secondary & Portfolio Finance Investments team focuses on acquiring pools of existing private equity assets and is a market leader in complex opportunities requiring innovative solutions (secondary spin-outs, fund restructurings, secondary directs, fund financings, etc.).
AlpInvest operates as an independent lead investor and is one of the largest and most active players, having completed some of the most sizeable and complex transactions to date in what has been a dynamic segment of the private equity industry.
In December 2020, AlpInvest closed the fundraise for its seventh Secondaries Program at its $9 billion hard cap. AlpInvest's track record and reputation resulted in an oversubscribed fundraise, ultimately closing $1 billion above the stated $8 billion target. AlpInvest has deployed the capital over 3.5 years and is now fundraising and invested its eighth Secondaries Program with a $13.5 billion target.
In its 20-year history, AlpInvest has committed over $34 billion through over 225 transactions in secondaries and currently has a dedicated 50-person team based in New York (27), Amsterdam (10), London (10) and Hong Kong (3) as of January 2025. Many of the current senior team members originally started with AlpInvest as Analyst or Associate, illustrating (i) a strong and cohesive team culture, and (ii) attractive career opportunities for new hires.
Associates are key members of the investment team, typically working directly with senior investment professionals in a flat team environment. Associates are responsible for due diligence, analysis and developing an initial and independent view of each investment opportunity.
Position Summary
As an associate on the team, you will be an active member of the deal team and be involved in all phases of the transaction process. You will be closely working together with the other members of the Secondaries team in Europe, as well as the global team and other divisions within AlpInvest.
Primary Responsibilities
- Review of investment opportunities
- Leadership role in due diligence meetings and other team initiatives
- Responsibility for financial modeling including:
- Detailed company-level analysis and underpinning for businesses across a variety of industries
- Fund-level cash flow structuring
- Preparation of due diligence requests and investment proposals
- Write investment proposals and defend them during internal AlpInvest benchmark meetings
- Monitor performance of investments including attending advisory board and General Partner meetings
Requirements
Education & Certificates
- University degree with a strong analytical academic background
Professional Experience
- Professional experience of at least 3 years in a relevant field, e.g. in banking, private equity. We will also consider more diverse work experience for candidates with demonstrated analytical skills and the below competencies.
Competencies & Attributes
- Strong financial skills, including excellent understanding of company valuation methods and modeling skills
- Business acumen, and the ability to quickly form a judgment on individual portfolio companies in a multitude of different industries
- Good written and oral communication skills in English (Dutch language skills not required), to communicate and defend investment proposals to the wider AlpInvest team and Investment Committee
- Taking on responsibilities and performing under pressure with a high level of attention to detail
- Ability to work in a team is essential
- High level of energy and enthusiasm to build a career in private equity, as part of a high-performance team
