Applied Physics Optics Internship: Broadband Integrated Photonics

**Introduction**:
**Your assignment**:
You will learn about the properties and principles of operation of integrated optical components (e.g., optical waveguides, grating couplers, edge-couplers, etc.) and about the integrated-optics material platforms suitable for broadband operation over the visible optical spectrum. At the heart of your assignment is the investigation and design of schemes for high-performance broadband optical coupling in photonic chips using state-of-the-art electromagnetic modeling tools available in ASML. You will assess the performance of your designs, accounting for physical phenomena such as material and structural dispersion, optical losses and even deviations in the design parameters caused by imperfections in the nanofabrication processes. Finally, you will estimate the feasibility of realizing and testing the proposed design according to the performance requirements and corresponding design parameters.

This is a Master apprentice/ graduation internship for 4-5 days a week with a duration of a minimum 6 months. The start date is as soon as possible, around February or March.

**Your profile**:
To be a match for this internship, you:

- Are busy with your master's in Applied Physics, Optics or Electrical Engineering.
- Are specializing in Photonics or Integrated Optics (a plus);
- Are skilled in tooling like MATLAB, Lumerical, or other electromagnetics simulation tools;
- Possess knowledge of differential equations and Fourier analysis;
- Are solution oriented and have a hands-on mentality;
- Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

**Other requirements you need to meet**:

- You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
- You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
- If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
