Mechatronics Internship: Alternative Actuator

**Introduction**:
The Optical Column mechatronics group is part of the Development and Engineering Department of ASML. This group develops new products to fill in technological gaps in the future roadmap of lithography and the lithography market and helps support costumers with complex field issues. The focus of the team is on Mechatronics systems that reduce the aberrations in the DUV Lens column using a variety of actuation principles e.g. piezo mechanical systems, pneumatic and thermal actuation.

**Your assignment**:
One of the ways to reduce the aberrations in the lens is by using a z-manipulator that moves a lens element up and down. Given the reliability issues of the current design, it is desired to explore possible alternatives for the actuation principle of this manipulator. Stated differently, given the current internal lens mechanism of the Z-manipulator, design a new, more reliable, actuator with position sensor.

The goals of the assignment are:

- Understanding the current working principle of the z-manipulator (mechanics, actuator and sensor)
- Providing alternative actuation methods/designs.
- Providing a (external) sensing solution for the actuator in case the sensor inside the lens fails.
- A feasibility study of the alternative actuation and sensing methods(s)/design(s) performance via simulation (MATLAB/Simulink).
- A feasibility study of the alternative actuation method(s)/design(s) for its manufacturability.
- In collaboration with the optical column mechanical development projection group, design the new actuator.

This is a bachelor internship with a duration of 6 months, for 5 days a week, starting in February 2025.

**Your Profile**:
To be a perfect match for this internship, you:

- Are a bachelor student in Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering with an interest in mechatronics/control engineering.
- You have curiosity for high-tech systems.
- You have good analytical skills and are self-steering
- You have good communication skills in English.

**Other requirements you need to meet**
- You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
- You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you ‘re currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate.
- If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
