A Short-Term Appointment is used to recruit staff to meet short-term needs. The duration of this assignment is provided above. The maximum duration of a short-term appointment including extensions shall not exceed 12 months.
A Short-Term Appointment does not carry any expectancy, legal or otherwise, of renewal and shall not be converted to any other type of appointment.
Due to the short-term nature of the assignment, the ICC reserves the right to make an appointment at one grade lower than that stated in the vacancy with a modified job description.
The terms and conditions of service for staff members appointed under a short-term appointment are governed by ICC/AI/2016/001.
**Duties and Responsibilities**
Under the general guidance of the Head of Chamber's Staff and the direct supervision of the Legal Advisor of the Division and/or the relevant coordinator of the team, the incumbent with be responsible for the following duties:
- Assisting with conducting in-depth legal research and analysis of questions of international criminal law, public international law and other areas of law as appropriate, as directed by the Judge and supervising Legal Officer;
- Assisting the Chamber in the drafting process of legal memoranda, judgments, decisions and orders;
- Participating in meetings and substantive discussions on issues arising in assigned trials;
- Cite checking and editing documents;
- Performing other tasks as requested by the Judge and supervising Legal Officer.
**Essential Qualifications**
- Education:_
Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law; a specialization in international criminal law, public international law, international humanitarian or human rights law would be considered an asset. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Experience:_
A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience with a first-level university degree, as indicated above. In possession of advanced university degree, no experience is required.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities:_
- Excellent knowledge of law and proven analytical skills; ability to conduct comprehensive research and provide analyses on complex legal questions not always enlightened by precedent;
- Proven excellent drafting skills, in at least one of the working languages of the Court (English or French);
- Effective organizational skills and ability to handle a large volume of work in an efficient and competent manner, even under time pressure; ability to rapidly prioritize tasks; ability to work as part of a team or independently.
- Proficiency in computer skills (MS Office package, including Word, Excel, Power point and Outlook);
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
- Sound judgment, attention to detail, utmost discretion, reliability, motivation, and willingness to learn new skills
- Knowledge of languages:_
Fluency in either of the working languages of the Court, English or French, is essential. Working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the court would be considered an asset (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish).
