Physics Internship: Photo Emission Modelling

At ASML Research, we work with materials exposed to intense light sources in the presence of various background gases. This can lead to material degradation that has to be understood and mitigated. One of the processes that plays a key role in such degradation is the emission of photo
- and secondary electron-induced by the incident photons **. **In order to link such electron emission to the material degradation, a detailed characterization of the electron emission from complex materials, relevant for ASML, is required. Due to the unique nature of the light sources used at ASML, the experimental studies are limited, and we have to rely on advanced modeling techniques.
**Your assignment**:
In this project, we intend to investigate the effect of photo-induced electron emission on the material degradation processes by performing simulations with a Monte Carlo-based code. The code allows for detailed calculations of photo-absorption and the resulting electron kinetics, including electron cascades inside the irradiated material and the emission of electrons from the material surface. Currently the code is limited to simple material configurations, and further development is required to be able to resolve more complex structures such as thin films and multilayers. The work is going to be carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
Some of your tasks may include:
- Define the simulation plan based on literature review;
- Run the first test simulations with the Monte Carlo code;
- Extend the code to be able to simulate layered materials;
- Finish the report and give a final presentation.
**Your profile**:
To be a good match for this internship, you:
- Are a Master student with a background in Physics (Solid State Physics, Atomic Physics, or related field);
- Are interested in numerical simulations and code development;
- Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).
This is an internship for a mínimal period of 6 months, for 4-5 days a week. The start date is around July.
