PhD Position in Wind Energy Research
2 dagen geleden
The energy transition requires a significant increase in wind energy production, necessitating a substantial expansion of installed capacity. To achieve this, larger turbine sizes with increased rotor diameters are being developed, which can capture more wind power and reduce costs. The rated capacity of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) is expected to continue growing, exceeding 25MW in the next five to ten years based on current design trends.
This PhD project is part of the NEXTgenT MSCA Doctoral Networks, which aims to train the next generation of young engineers to understand the technical and theoretical limits of OWT rotor design. The project will investigate how a combination of profile clustering and numerical modelling can be used to provide a robust wind speed profile accurate to 500m using parameters that can be relatively easily inferred from observations or available reanalyses. These can then be used to assess turbine loading conditions for design and performance calculations.
RequirementsTo be eligible for this PhD position, you should have an MSc degree in wind energy or a related engineering discipline, such as mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, applied physics, or applied mathematics. You should also have good mathematical and analytical skills, as well as a strong interest in numerical modelling and data analysis. Experience with numerical fluid dynamics and knowledge of data-driven techniques are desirable.
Eligibility criteria are dictated by the European Commission under the Horizon MSCA Doctoral Networks Programme. We welcome applications from PhD candidates from any country fulfilling the following mobility criteria:
- Eligible candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their first host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before their recruitment by the host institution.
- Eligible candidates must have a master's degree relevant to the chosen position or its equivalent that would entitle them to a doctorate, awarded before the start of the positions.
Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis.
Conditions of EmploymentDoctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5-year contract with an official go/no-go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €2770 per month in the first year to €3539 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School, which provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff, and a mentor.
The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service, which provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands.
