PhD Position in Aerodynamics and Aeroelasticity of Large Wind Turbines

2 maanden geleden

Delft, Zuid-Holland, Nederland TU Delft Voltijd
Job Overview

The energy transition requires a significant expansion of wind energy, necessitating a substantial increase in installed capacity. To achieve this, larger turbine sizes with increased rotor diameters are being developed, capturing more wind power and reducing costs. This PhD project is part of the NEXTgenT MSCA Doctoral Networks, aiming to train the next generation of engineers to understand technical and theoretical limits and design the next generation of over 25MW OWT rotor systems.

Research Objectives
  • Understand and model 3D unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelasticity of extra-large wind turbine rotors.
  • Develop novel unsteady 3D induction models.
  • Dynamic testing of a scaled-down wind turbine in a wind tunnel.
  • Validate the models at different scales under various operational conditions.
Requirements

The candidate should have an MSc degree in wind energy or a related engineering discipline, with proven experience in wind engineering. A combination of good mathematical and analytical skills, and a strong interest in numerical and experimental aerodynamics/aeroelasticity, are required. Experience with numerical and experimental techniques in aerodynamics or fluid dynamics is preferred.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Eligible candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of their first host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before their recruitment.
  • Eligible candidates must have a master's degree relevant to the chosen position or its equivalent, awarded before the start of the position.
Conditions of Employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment, in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5-year contract with an official go/no-go progress assessment within 15 months, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €2770 per month in the first year to €3539 in the fourth year.
