Job Description

We are seeking a talented PhD candidate to contribute to the development of sustainable nuclear technologies for medical and energy applications. The successful candidate will work on a challenging project focused on the modeling of microstructure evolution and failure of aluminum under neutron load.

Project Overview

The EU project Magic-RR addresses the issues of damage mechanisms and lack of data on research reactor materials at relevant operating conditions for long-term operation of research reactors. The project aims to develop advanced multi-scale modeling methods for prediction of the influence of irradiation on mechanical properties of reactor materials.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a multi-scale approach that bridges from physical processes at the crystalline lattice scale to mechanical failure at the macroscopic application scale.
  • Use a combination of modeling techniques, including cluster dynamics, crystal plasticity, and probabilistic brittle failure models.
  • Apply the modeling framework to an aluminum alloy used for structural components of research reactors.

Requirements

  • A talented, motivated, and enthusiastic candidate with strong analytical skills, initiative, creativity, and flexibility.
  • A MSc-degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computational Mechanics, or Applied Mathematics.
  • A background and strong interest in mechanics of materials and materials science.
  • Experience in multi-scale modeling and micromechanics is beneficial.
  • Excellent oral communication and writing skills in English.

Working at Eindhoven University of Technology

The successful candidate will work in the section of Mechanics of Materials at the department of Mechanical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology. The research activities of the MoM section focus on the fundamental understanding of various macroscopic problems in materials processing, forming, and application. The main challenge is the accurate prediction of mechanical properties of materials with complex microstructures, with a direct focus on industrial and societal needs.

Conditions of Employment

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation after nine months.
  • Salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher.
