About the Project

This research project focuses on developing sustainable materials and processes to reduce the environmental impact of Si heterojunction (SHTJ) cells without compromising efficiency. The goal is to create thinner wafers and avoid the use of scarce metals like indium and silver.

Work Activities

Eco-design plays a crucial role in minimizing environmental impact through resource use, energy conservation, and emissions. By reducing silicon wafer thickness, we can increase active solar cell area per kg of Si, potentially reducing costs and improving energy returns. Thinner wafers also offer increased tolerance to bulk defects, enabling the production of higher efficiencies from low-cost, low-energy-intensive materials like upgraded metallurgical-grade silicon.

This project involves designing and fabricating light trapping textures on thin solar cells, building on expertise in nature-inspired, rationally designed dielectric textures with correlated disorder. We will also investigate the introduction of metallic nanoscale networks based on sustainable metal alternatives, such as copper, that work as transparent electrodes.

Qualifications

We invite applications from highly motivated candidates with a strong background in physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering, and a keen interest in solar cells. Prospective PhD candidates must hold an MSc degree in physics or an equivalent qualification.

Work Environment

The 3DPV group, led by Prof. Esther Alarcon, studies light-matter interactions in nanoscale systems for sustainable energy storage and conversion. Our group is part of the AMOLF Light Management in Photovoltaic Materials Program, which shares a state-of-the-art cleanroom for nanofabrication and characterization. We offer a highly collaborative and supportive environment, fostering strong connections within the group and with national and international partners.

Working Conditions
  • The working atmosphere at the institute is informal and collaborative.
  • The position is a full-time appointment for four years.
  • The starting salary is €2,884 gross per month, with a range of employment benefits.
  • After successful completion of the PhD research, a PhD degree will be granted at the University of Amsterdam.
  • Several courses are offered specifically for PhD students.
  • AMOLF assists new foreign PhD students with housing and visa applications, and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
