PhD Researcher in Eco-Friendly Solar Cell Development

This project focuses on developing sustainable materials and processes to reduce the environmental impact of Si heterojunction (SHTJ) cells without compromising efficiency. By using thinner wafers and avoiding scarce metals like indium and silver, we aim to create more cost-effective and energy-efficient solar cells.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs a PhD researcher in this project, you will design and fabricate light trapping textures on thin solar cells, leveraging our expertise in nature-inspired dielectric textures with correlated disorder. You will also investigate the introduction of metallic nanoscale networks based on sustainable metal alternatives, such as copper, that work as transparent electrodes.
Additionally, you will learn cleanroom and electrochemical deposition methods to fabricate nanopatterned metal and metal oxide networks. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of more sustainable solar cells and gain hands-on experience in materials science and engineering.
RequirementsWe invite applications from highly motivated candidates with a strong background in physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering. A keen interest in solar cells and a willingness to learn are essential. Prospective PhD candidates must hold an MSc degree in physics or an equivalent qualification.
Work EnvironmentThe 3DPV group, led by Prof. Esther Alarcon, is a dynamic and international team of researchers working on sustainable energy storage and conversion. Our group is part of the AMOLF Light Management in Photovoltaic Materials Program, which offers access to state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities and a collaborative atmosphere.
