About the Project

This project focuses on developing sustainable materials and processes to reduce the environmental impact of Si heterojunction (SHTJ) cells without compromising efficiency. The goal is to create a more sustainable solar cell technology by minimizing the use of scarce metals and reducing the silicon wafer thickness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and fabricate light trapping textures on thin solar cells using nature-inspired rationally designed dielectric textures with correlated disorder.
  • Investigate the introduction of metallic nanoscale networks based on sustainable metal alternatives, such as copper, as transparent electrodes.
  • Learn cleanroom and electrochemical deposition methods to fabricate nanopatterned metal and metal oxide networks.
Requirements

We invite applications from highly motivated candidates with a strong background in physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering, and a keen interest in solar cells. A Master's degree in physics or equivalent qualification is required.

About the Team

The 3DPV group, led by Prof. Esther Alarcon, studies light-matter interactions in nanoscale systems for sustainable energy storage and conversion. The group is composed of an international team of 7-10 PhD students, postdocs, and master students working in a collaborative atmosphere.

About AMOLF

AMOLF is a research institute that focuses on fundamental research on the physics of complex forms of matter and the creation of new functional materials. The institute is part of NWO-I and collaborates with academia and industry.

Working Conditions
  • The working atmosphere at the institute is informal and collaborative.
  • The position is a full-time appointment for four years.
  • The starting salary is €2,884 gross per month, and a range of employment benefits are offered.
  • After successful completion of the PhD research, a PhD degree will be granted at the University of Amsterdam.
  • Several courses are offered specifically for PhD students.
  • AMOLF assists new foreign PhD students with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
