Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team in the area of microwave design and simulation of spin-based quantum processing units. As a PhD researcher, you will be part of a dynamic team working on the realization of a solid design and simulation platform for quantum processing units based on spin technology.

The primary objective of this research program is to create a solid framework to understand the electromagnetic properties of spin qubits in solid-state systems to support the development of the next generation of Quantum Processing Unit (QPU). In terms of QPU design, the research focuses on the interaction between spin qubits and a superconducting resonator, aiming to explore optimal connectivity through the development of novel coupling architectures and to understand their decoherence and unwanted coupling mechanisms.

As a PhD researcher, you will be responsible for developing novel designs and investigating their theoretical properties, as well as realizing this chip using the University's cleanroom facilities. You will work closely with other researchers from QuTech and the Microelectronics department of TU-Delft, and have the opportunity to shape your research project according to your specific interests and expertise.

This project is a part of the European flagship program, "Quantum Large Scale Integration in Silicon (QLSI)". You will be expected to actively participate in seminars and discussions with colleagues from the department and with industrial partners, as well as present your findings at (inter)national conferences or workshops.

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you must have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field. You should be a curious learner, analytical thinker, and tech-savvy individual with a passion for solving real-world problems in quantum computing.

Additionally, you should be comfortable navigating through microwave design software such as CST and HFSS, and be proficient in programming languages like Python. Prior experience with design and simulation of quantum circuits and nano-fabrication is not required, but a willingness to learn and apply new techniques is highly valued.

Conditions of Employment

As a PhD candidate, you will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €2770 per month in the first year to €3539 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School, which provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff, and a mentor.

The TU Delft offers a customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service, which provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands.
