Research Project Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team at Erasmus MC in the Netherlands. The successful applicant will work on a 4-year project to develop a new generation of antibiotics for respiratory tract infections.
Background
Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern worldwide, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus are frequent causes of respiratory infections, often resistant to multiple antibiotics. Our research aims to provide an alternative treatment strategy for these infections by investigating the antimicrobial activity of novel compounds.
Research Objectives
The PhD candidate will be responsible for testing the effectivity of these compounds as treatment for S. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa infections using lung organoids, primary macrophages, mouse models, and luciferase-based in vivo imaging techniques. The project will also assess optimal treatment regimens and evaluate the compounds' potential for use as standalone or adjuvant therapies.
Methodology
The project will employ a range of techniques, including bacterial growth assays, bioluminescence, cell culture, flow cytometry, multiplex cytokine analyses, and microscopy technologies. The PhD candidate will work closely with our research team, including Dr. Wendy Unger, Dr. Saskia Braber, Prof. Roland Pieters, and Dr. Marc Wösten, to achieve the project's objectives.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biomolecular Life Sciences, Biology, or related disciplines
- Strong motivation for doing science, with a keen focus on immunology and host-pathogen interactions
- Experience in cell culture, bacterial flow cytometry, and analyzing large datasets
- Affinity with or interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment
- Possession of or willingness to obtain Art 9/Felasa B certificate for animal experimentation
What We Offer
- A temporary position for 4 years
- Gross monthly salary of € 3017,- in the 1st year, increasing to € 3824,- in the 4th year (scale OIO), based on a 36 hour workweek
