Research ProjectThe PhD student will investigate the use of 145 kV switchgear in the 150 kV grid, with the goal of reducing space and costs while maintaining reliability and safety. The project will involve research on insulation coordination, simulations for determining overvoltages, application of surge arresters, full-scale testing, and on-site measurements.
Requirements- Master's and Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Sustainable Energy Technology, Applied Physics, or equivalent
- Excellent academic record (grades of B (8) or higher)
- Excellent analytical and writing skills
- Very good command of English
- Ability to read and critically analyze high voltage technology, materials, and asset management papers
- Strong knowledge of high voltage technology, insulation coordination, and power system overvoltages
- Independent, self-motivated, and eager to learn
TU Delft offers a four-year PhD appointment, with an anticipated start date between [insert dates]. The successful candidate will be supervised by ir. André Lathouwers, Dennis van der Born, and Peter Vaessen. The PhD student will work closely with the Dutch high voltage transmission system operator TenneT TSO and will have the opportunity to coach and mentor master students.
About the DepartmentThe Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy is a leading research group in the field of electrical sustainable energy. The department focuses on four areas: DC Systems, Energy Conversion and Storage, Photovoltaic Materials and Devices, and Intelligent Electrical Power Grids. The High Voltage Technologies group, headed by Professor Peter Vaessen, works on the future of our power system, developing novel and sustainable insulation materials, investigating high voltage components and materials ageing, and developing new diagnostic techniques for determining high voltage asset health.
