Postdoctoral Researcher in Cultural Heritage X-ray Techniques
1 week geleden
The cutting-edge X-ray methodologies are accessible at synchrotron radiation facilities, such as those in Grenoble and Hamburg. However, access to these exceptional sources is restricted, placing Dutch researchers at a disadvantage, as the Netherlands is not directly involved in these prominent research centers. The Smart*Light initiative aims to make sophisticated X-ray analytical techniques available within the Netherlands. A collaboration among several institutions in the Netherlands and Flanders is underway to develop a compact apparatus that includes a powerful and energy-tunable X-ray source, along with optics and detectors. This source utilizes the Inverse Compton Effect, transforming visible laser light scattered by a relativistic electron beam into the X-ray spectrum, producing a brilliant, coherent X-ray beam with a narrow bandwidth.
Your primary responsibility will be to construct and commission the experimental endstation for Smart*Light. This endstation is designed for beam characterization and proof-of-concept experiments focusing on cultural heritage artifacts, including art and archaeological objects. This role involves testing various components in the laboratory using X-ray tubes, verifying their integration into the control software, determining spectroscopic performance metrics, optimizing the instrument, and demonstrating its capabilities through initial experiments. Based on the outcomes of these early experiments, you will contribute to the planning of future enhancements for Smart*Light, particularly in the areas of optics and beam shaping.
This position will be part of the Alfeld Lab team within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at TU Delft. The Department is a diverse institution that operates in small laboratories led by independent principal investigators across various topics, including steel microstructure optimization, corrosion, recycling, and cultural heritage investigation. The Alfeld Lab focuses on multi-modal studies of cultural heritage, emphasizing X-ray investigations and the development of innovative instruments and data analysis techniques.
You will collaborate closely with the principal investigator, M. Alfeld, on the Smart*Light endstation in the Delft laboratory and with the TU/e team on the installation of the endstation in Eindhoven. Opportunities to supervise Master's students during the project and to pursue independent research related to spectroscopy and/or cultural heritage are available.
Qualifications- Experience in operating and configuring X-ray instruments for spectrometry, diffraction, imaging, or related techniques.
- A PhD in a scientific discipline (preferably physics or chemistry) or engineering (materials science) is required.
- Ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Moderate programming skills in Python or a willingness to develop these skills during the project.
- Proficiency in English is essential, with a preference for knowledge of Dutch.
- Previous experience with cultural heritage is not mandatory but is considered an advantage.
Salary and benefits are aligned with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. TU Delft offers a customizable compensation package, health insurance discounts, and a monthly contribution for work-related expenses. Flexible working hours can be arranged.
For international candidates, TU Delft provides a relocation service to assist new employees in preparing for their move and settling into the Netherlands. This service includes support for partners and organizes events to help expand your social network.
