Job Description

Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are a crucial material in the energy transition. However, most high-performance composites are made of thermoset polymer matrix material, which is challenging to recycle. To address this issue, researchers are developing novel matrix systems, such as recyclable thermoplastic polymers.

To predict and improve the lifetime of composite parts, a multi-scale modeling approach is used. This approach involves a mesoscale model for the composite at the fiber-matrix level. However, data for the matrix are often based on bulk specimen tests, and classic continuum models are not able to capture the degree of heterogeneity of the stress and strain field dictating macroscopic failure.

Job Requirements
  • Develop a novel numerical model to predict amorphous plasticity at the mesoscale.
  • Conduct original micromechanical tests on polymer matrices and composites to inform and challenge the numerical predictions.
  • Compare the behavior of different polymer matrices (e.g. thermoset versus thermoplastic, virgin versus recycled,...).
Conditions of Employment
  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months.
