Climate Change Researcher Internship: Make a Sustainable Impact

At TNO, we are on a mission to reduce the climate impact of ICT usage. We are looking for motivated students who share our goal of a more sustainable future for the ICT sector.
About this positionICT use has increased significantly in recent decades, and its impact on the environment is substantial. Our research focuses on limiting CO2e emissions from digital infrastructure and enhancing its sustainability.
Your roleWe are working on various aspects of the (climate-related) sustainability of our ICT use. In this, we have multiple research lines in various projects, focusing broadly on the entire digital infrastructure. Your task will be to contribute to one of these research lines and work together with our team to make a positive impact on the environment.
Key areas of research- The measurement of energy use of ICT services (scope 2 emissions). We aim to measure and model the energy consumption of hardware components used while using these services.
- Increase efficiency of ICT itself. We want to optimize services, AI algorithms, cloud usage, and software development to reduce their environmental impact.
- Analysis of the impact of the hardware itself (scope 3 emissions). We work on modeling the climate impact of hardware production, shipment, installation, and teardown through Life Cycle Analysis.
- Studying user behavior of ICT services. We study motivations for ICT use, how to stimulate digital sobriety, and side/rebound effects of reduced ICT use.
- Studying market forces and policy effects. We analyze how government policies and regulations influence the ICT sector's sustainability.
You will be part of a bigger effort, working within a team of top experts. Depending on your results, publishing the findings in a scientific paper may be possible, targeting a high-impact academic or industrial conference. You will also receive a highly professional internship environment, a suitable internship allowance (€1,500 per month), and eight hours of free leave per internship month.
