Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD candidate to join our research team at the University of Twente. The successful candidate will work on laser-based manufacturing techniques for integrated electronic and photonic circuits as part of a large Dutch project, titled 'Groeifonds NXTGEN HIGHTECH'. This project aims to develop groundbreaking developments in next generation high-tech equipment to support growth and development of important Dutch high-tech sectors.

The Project

The project focuses on laser-based methods for printing ever finer structuring required for bonding and assembly of electronic and photonic chips. Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is an innovative Additive Manufacturing process that can help in printing complex free-standing microstructures. The successful candidate will investigate novel methods for laser-assisted soldering of circuit elements to improve the assembly of heterogeneous systems.

Your Role

You will work closely with researchers in other groups at the University of Twente and industrial partners in the project. You will have access to renowned research facilities and will be responsible for developing a setup to enable the laser-assisted transfer and analyzing printed materials. Your tasks will include:

  • Investigating novel methods for laser-assisted soldering of circuit elements
  • Developing a setup to enable the laser-assisted transfer
  • Analyzing printed materials
  • Collaborating with researchers and industrial partners
Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you should have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, Electrical or Materials Engineering, or a closely related discipline. You should also have good knowledge of fundamental aspects of laser-material processing and experience in using a range of technologies/techniques for surface characterisation. Excellent analysis skills, analytical mind-set, and excellent communication skills are also essential.

We offer a four-year fulltime PhD position with a starting salary of € 2.770,- gross per month in the first year and increasing to € 3.539,- gross per month in the fourth year.
