Position Summary

The research team at the Netherlands Cancer Institute is focused on uncovering new cellular weaknesses that can be targeted for innovative cancer treatments. Our work integrates advanced genomic and functional genetic methodologies with bioinformatics to yield groundbreaking insights into critical molecular processes.

Recently, our investigations have centered on the effects of amino acid deficiencies on mRNA translation, leading to the unexpected discovery of how these shortages influence protein synthesis. Our findings indicate that such treatments can provoke cancer cells to generate abnormal proteins through mechanisms like ribosomal frameshifting and codon reassignment.

Key questions that remain include:
- What effects do these defective protein products have on cellular characteristics?
- How are these processes regulated?
- In what ways can we leverage this knowledge for therapeutic applications in oncology? To address these questions, we aim to develop and implement various computational strategies.

Our laboratory is equipped with extensive computational resources, including multiple high-performance servers and additional computational support from national initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a candidate to initiate an independent research agenda focused on the implications of amino acid shortages in cancer biology.

The selected applicant will be tasked with analyzing and enhancing bioinformatics workflows to interpret datasets from Ribo-seq, DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, and mass spectrometry.

Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to utilize both internal and external resources to construct predictive models concerning defective protein synthesis.

We anticipate that the successful candidate will engage collaboratively with other computational and experimental scientists, mentor PhD and undergraduate students, and contribute to the preparation of scientific publications, project documentation, and grant proposals.

Essential Skills

The Agami lab is looking for a driven bioinformatics postdoctoral researcher with a robust background in large-scale data analysis and a strong dedication to scientific inquiry.

Ideal candidates will possess the following skills:
1. Proficiency in analyzing proteomics datasets (including protein expression and phosphoproteomics).
2. Experience with genomic datasets (RNA-seq, Ribo-seq, CRISPR screening).
3. Strong programming skills in R, along with proficiency in at least one of the following languages: PERL or Python.
4. Familiarity with high-performance computing environments and competence in UNIX and BASH scripting.

A foundational understanding of cancer biology and functional genetics tools will be considered advantageous. We seek a candidate who is highly motivated, innovative, and capable of working effectively within a team.

Beyond being a collaborative team member, we expect the candidate to demonstrate a high level of independence, possess a problem-solving mindset, and exhibit strong analytical and technical skills, complemented by excellent communication and presentation abilities.

Compensation and Benefits

The gross monthly salary for this position will range from €4118 to a maximum of €4611, in accordance with standard postdoctoral salary scales.

Employment terms will align with the Collective Labor Agreement for Hospitals. Additionally, the candidate will receive a fixed year-end bonus (8.33%) and holiday pay (8.33%).

Travel expenses will be reimbursed at a rate of €0.19 per kilometer, and free parking is available. We encourage the use of public transport and cycling, offering attractive arrangements for cyclists and discounts on public transport cards.
