Role Overview
The Institute of Political Science at Universiteit Leiden is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chair of International Relations. This is a full-time role, with responsibilities commencing promptly. This prestigious position is associated with the significant growth of the institute's educational offerings in international relations, coinciding with the recent recruitment of numerous exceptional young scholars dedicated to research and instruction in this vital field.
The successful candidate will be tasked with providing both research and educational leadership within the multifaceted and evolving domain of international relations. While the position is open to various subfields and methodological perspectives, we are particularly keen on candidates who can introduce fresh areas of expertise to our esteemed faculty.
The new professor will be expected to engage in and disseminate advanced research in international relations, mentor junior faculty, instruct undergraduate and graduate students, supervise doctoral candidates, and play a pivotal role in securing external research funding as well as contributing to the intellectual and administrative dynamics of the Institute.
Work Environment
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences comprises five institutes: Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Education and Child Studies, Political Science, and Psychology. The faculty serves approximately 7000 students and employs around 1000 staff members. Within these institutes, not only is education delivered, but also pioneering research is conducted that expands our understanding of human behavior and societal frameworks. The unique aspect of our faculty lies in the diversity of research topics, varied teaching methodologies, and the structured professional support provided, allowing you to explore and cultivate your interests and expertise.
The Institute of Political Science has a rich history, being the first in the world to appoint a Professor of Politics. Today, it stands as a comprehensive disciplinary unit with around 80 academic staff members, including lecturers, assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors, along with PhD and post-doctoral researchers based in various locations. The institute's academic community is characterized by a balanced representation of Dutch and international members.
The Institute is recognized for its innovative research in parliamentary governance, political parties, electoral behavior, and Dutch politics, and is increasingly acknowledged for its substantial expertise in international relations and European politics. The research staff consistently publish in leading academic journals and presses and have a strong track record of securing national and European research grants.
The research program 'Institutions, Decisions and Collective Behaviour' encompasses eight research clusters, including Conflict, Crisis Management, Elections, European Integration, and more. Members are also involved in several multidisciplinary research centers within the university.
The Institute offers a variety of taught programs at both Bachelor and Master levels and trains PhD students in political science. The BSc program includes general Political Science, International Politics, and International Relations and Organisations, with a significant increase in student enrollment in recent years, particularly in international relations.
Candidate Profile
Applicants for this role must hold a PhD, possess a robust publication record in reputable journals and/or academic presses, and have a clear vision for future research that aligns with the institute's strategic objectives. A proven ability to secure research funding, lead research initiatives, supervise PhD candidates to completion, and mentor junior colleagues is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate experience in delivering high-quality education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including lectures, seminars, and thesis supervision. Maturity and experience to provide visionary and inclusive leadership within the Institute are essential.
A demonstrated capacity for inclusive and respectful leadership is a critical requirement for this role. This aligns with the university's commitment to fostering an inspiring and open knowledge community, emphasizing a balance between education, research, and societal relevance.
Candidates must be fluent in English and preferably have a working knowledge of Dutch, or be willing to learn within a specified timeframe.
