Role Overview
The Institute of Political Science at Universiteit Leiden is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Professor of International Relations. This is a full-time role, aimed at enhancing the institute's educational offerings in international relations, following a notable expansion in recent years.
The selected candidate will be responsible for providing leadership in both research and education within the intricate and evolving domain of international relations. While the position is open to various subfields and methodologies, we are particularly keen on attracting candidates who can introduce fresh areas of expertise to our esteemed faculty.
The new professor will be expected to engage in and disseminate advanced research in international relations, mentor junior faculty, instruct undergraduate and graduate students, supervise doctoral candidates, and play a pivotal role in securing external research funding as well as contributing to the intellectual and administrative activities of the Institute.
Work Environment
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences encompasses five institutes, including Political Science, and is home to approximately 7000 students and 1000 staff members. Our faculty not only delivers education but also conducts innovative research that expands our understanding of human behavior and societal frameworks. The diverse range of research topics and teaching styles, along with well-organized professional support, allows for the exploration and development of individual interests and expertise.
The Institute of Political Science has a rich history, being the first in the world to appoint a Professor of Politics. Today, it comprises around 80 academic staff members, including lecturers, assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors, along with PhD and post-doctoral researchers. The institute's academic community is characterized by a balanced mix of Dutch and international members.
The Institute is recognized for its pioneering research in areas such as parliamentary governance, political parties, electoral behavior, and Dutch politics, while also gaining acclaim for its expertise in international relations and European politics. Our research staff frequently publish in top-tier journals and are successful in securing national and European research grants.
The research program 'Institutions, Decisions and Collective Behaviour' includes eight interconnected research clusters: Conflict, Conflict Resolution and Crisis Management; Elections, Communication and Public Opinion; European Integration; Identity, Ethnicity and Political Community; International Organisation; Legitimacy and Justice; Politics in The Netherlands; Representation and Political Parties. Members of the institute also contribute to various multidisciplinary research centers within the university.
The Institute offers a variety of taught programs at both Bachelor and Master levels and trains PhD students in political science. The Bachelor’s program includes general Political Science and International Politics, while the Master’s program features several specializations, predominantly taught in English. The introduction of the International Relations and Organisations specialization has significantly increased student enrollment, particularly from international backgrounds, necessitating the expansion of our teaching staff in this area.
Candidate Profile
Applicants for this position must hold a PhD and possess a robust publication record in reputable journals or academic presses. A clear vision for future research aligned with the institute's strategic objectives is essential, along with a proven history of securing research grants, leading research initiatives, supervising PhD candidates to completion, and mentoring junior colleagues. Experience in designing and delivering high-quality educational programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels is required.
Candidates should demonstrate the maturity and experience necessary to provide visionary, inclusive, and respectful leadership within the Institute of Political Science. Fluency in English is mandatory, and a working knowledge of Dutch is preferred; candidates not proficient in Dutch should be willing to learn within a specified timeframe. Experience in connecting research with policy and societal needs is advantageous. The successful candidate can expect:
- An appointment in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities;
- A competitive salary ranging from €6.648 to €9.680 gross per month, based on experience;
- Additional benefits including a holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, and a pension scheme;
- Flexible working hours and a minimum of 29 leave days based on a full-time schedule;
- Opportunities for hybrid working arrangements within the Netherlands;
- Support for home office setups, including a laptop and mobile phone where applicable.
The university places a high value on teaching quality, requiring all academic staff with teaching responsibilities to obtain the University Teaching Qualification within two years.
