Job Description

Fast charging stations for electric vehicles pose significant challenges to the electric grid. The high power demand during peak charging periods can lead to grid instability, voltage fluctuations, and increased stress on distribution infrastructure. Additionally, these stations can cause power quality issues such as harmonic distortion and reduce overall grid efficiency, particularly in areas with limited grid capacity or renewable energy integration.

To address these challenges, we are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to work on power electronics solutions to enhance the integration of fast charging stations in the power grid. The successful candidate will investigate suitable power electronics solutions to mitigate the challenges caused by the integration of high-power charging stations into the grid.

The PhD will be part of the EU project Electronic Components and Systems for Flexible, Coordinated, and Resilient Distributed Renewable Energy Systems (ECS4DRES). This groundbreaking initiative is co-funded by Horizon Europe and the Federal Government, involving 33 partners across 6 European countries.

Key activities include investigating current and future problems in the integration of fast charging stations in the grid, analyzing and comparing different power electronics systems, assessing various power converters, implementing simulation models of the converters, and analyzing, designing, and optimizing power converters.

Besides research, the successful candidate will also contribute to education within the department, supervising BSc and MSc students in their research projects and assisting in education, such as in bachelor courses.

Requirements

  • A MSc degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant program
  • Strong background in power electronics, particularly dc-dc converters, grid-connected converters, and multilevel converters
  • Hands-on experience with prototypes, including PCB design, implementation, and experimental verification
  • Experience with control design and implementation for grid-connected converters is a plus
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Enthusiasm and motivation to work on highly challenging research topics
