PhD Researcher in Multiscale Modeling of Canvas Paintings

2 maanden geleden

Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, Nederland Eindhoven University of Technology Voltijd

Position Overview

This role is integral to the VANGOGH research initiative, aimed at unraveling and forecasting the deterioration of canvas paintings through a comprehensive multiscale and multiphysics approach. This project is supported by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant) and seeks to assemble a team of dedicated and passionate researchers for this innovative interdisciplinary endeavor.

Project Context

Canvas paintings are not only invaluable cultural treasures but also complex, heterogeneous systems influenced by various physical forces. These interactions can lead to multiple degradation issues, such as surface wrinkling, cracking, delamination, and paint flaking, which significantly impact the artwork's aesthetic, structural integrity, and longevity.

Main Objectives

  • To create a multiscale hygro-thermo-mechanical model for paint and canvas materials, informed by the effective behavior of three-dimensional representative volume elements of these heterogeneous systems.
  • To investigate local microstructural instability phenomena within the canvas material.
  • To establish a multiscale framework addressing multiphysics instability in canvas and the cracking and delamination of paint, focusing on the interrelations between these phenomena.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be positioned within the chair of Applied Mechanics in the Department of the Built Environment, which emphasizes education and research in mechanics, particularly concerning multiscale, multiphysics, and optimization challenges related to the built environment. This chair is affiliated with the Graduate School of Engineering Mechanics, Netherlands, which provides an advanced training program for PhD students, integrating a series of graduate courses aligned with cutting-edge research themes.

The successful applicant will collaborate closely with fellow PhD students engaged in various aspects of the degradation response of cultural heritage materials.

This project is part of NICAS (Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science) and enjoys the backing of prominent national and international museums and cultural heritage organizations.

Qualifications

  • A motivated and talented researcher with strong analytical skills, creativity, and initiative.
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Mathematical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A solid foundation in material mechanics and multiscale, multiphysics methodologies is highly desirable.
  • A keen interest in applying mechanical principles to the interdisciplinary field of cultural heritage.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English.

Employment Conditions

This position offers a significant opportunity within a dynamic and ambitious university environment, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement within an international network. The successful candidate will enjoy:

  • A full-time contract for four years, subject to an intermediate evaluation after nine months, with 10% of the time allocated to teaching responsibilities.
  • Competitive salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (minimum €2,770, maximum €3,539).
  • An annual bonus of 8.3% and vacation pay of 8%.
  • Access to high-quality training programs and support for developing into an independent, self-aware researcher.
  • Excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare, and sports facilities.
  • Reimbursement for commuting, remote work, and internet expenses.
  • Assistance from a Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme for international candidates.
