The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) at Leiden University is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher for a 24-month interdisciplinary project focused on the influence of emotions in EU foreign policy during crises. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with Dr. Seda Gürkan and contribute to the EUMOTIONS research team.

Key Responsibilities
The EUMOTIONS project investigates how emotions articulated by political leaders at both EU and member state levels shape the EU's policy responses in times of international crises. The project aims to uncover:

  • The correlation between political elites' emotions and the EU's crisis management strategies;
  • The impact of these emotions on public perception and support for significant foreign policy actions, including sanctions and enlargement decisions;
  • The interpretation of the EU's emotional discourse by external nations and its implications for international relations.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be tasked with the collection and analysis of data, as well as the creation and dissemination of scientific outputs. Candidates should possess a strong background in EU policies and politics, particularly regarding foreign policy, and familiarity with the role of emotions in international relations is highly advantageous. Extensive experience in qualitative research methodologies, such as elite interviews and content analysis, is expected.

Expectations
The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Conduct both independent and collaborative research on the emotional dimensions of EU foreign policy.
  • Collect and analyze data pertaining to emotions in EU foreign policy, focusing on current issues like the EU's response to geopolitical events.
  • Contribute to the development of peer-reviewed publications, special issues, and edited volumes centered on "Emotions in EU Foreign Policy" under Dr. Gürkan's guidance.
  • Engage in project communication activities, including conference presentations and blog contributions.
  • Occasionally teach on topics related to EU foreign policy and qualitative research methods at the doctoral level.
  • Organize international workshops and roundtable discussions with policymakers.

Work Environment
The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA) is dedicated to addressing pressing societal issues through interdisciplinary education and research. Located in The Hague, the faculty fosters collaboration with academic and societal partners, ensuring that students and professionals are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to society.

ISGA specializes in security studies, analyzing issues with local, national, and global implications, including crises, terrorism, and cyber threats. The institute employs a multidisciplinary approach to research.

Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who can work autonomously and adapt to diverse tasks. Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A PhD in political science or a related field, with a focus on themes pertinent to the EUMOTIONS project.
  • In-depth knowledge of EU foreign policy.
  • Prior exposure to the study of emotions in international relations is a significant advantage.
  • Proficiency in qualitative research methods, particularly elite interviews and content analysis.
  • Experience in quantitative research methods is a plus.
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • A proactive attitude and a collaborative spirit.
  • Excellent command of English.

  • A 12-month employment contract, extendable based on research performance, with potential for further extension depending on funding.
  • A competitive salary ranging from €3,226 to €5,090 gross per month for a full-time position.

  • Flexible working hours and a minimum of 29 leave days per year.
