The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) at Leiden University is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Researcher for a full-time, 24-month engagement within an interdisciplinary initiative focusing on the influence of emotions in EU foreign policy during crises (EUMOTIONS). The selected candidate will collaborate closely with Dr. Seda Gürkan and contribute to the research team of the EUMOTIONS project.

Key Responsibilities
The EUMOTIONS project investigates how emotions articulated by political leaders at both EU and member state levels shape the EU's policy responses in times of international crises. The project aims to uncover:

  • The correlation between emotions expressed by political figures and the EU's approach to crisis management;
  • The impact of these emotions on public perception and support for significant foreign policy decisions, including sanctions and enlargement;
  • The perceptions of third countries regarding the EU's emotional discourse and its actions or inactions in global relations.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be tasked with the collection and analysis of data, as well as the production and dissemination of scholarly outputs. Candidates should possess relevant expertise in EU policies and politics, particularly concerning the EU's foreign policy. Familiarity with the role of emotions in international relations research is highly advantageous. Additionally, substantial experience with qualitative research methodologies, including elite interviews and content analysis, is expected.

Expectations
The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct both independent and collaborative research on the emotional dimensions of EU foreign policy.
  • Engage in data collection and analysis concerning emotions in EU foreign policy, focusing on current issues such as the EU's response to international crises.
  • Contribute to the development of peer-reviewed articles, special issues, and edited volumes on "Emotions in EU Foreign Policy" under Dr. Gürkan's guidance.
  • Participate in communication activities, including conference presentations and blog contributions.
  • Occasionally take on teaching responsibilities related to EU foreign policy and qualitative research methods at the doctoral level.
  • Organize international scientific workshops and roundtable discussions with policymakers.

Candidate Profile
We are looking for an individual who can work autonomously and is adaptable to diverse tasks. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in political science or a related field such as International Relations, EU studies, or sociology, with a research focus relevant to the EUMOTIONS project.
  • In-depth knowledge of EU foreign policy.
  • Prior experience with emotions in international relations is a significant advantage.
  • Expertise in qualitative research methods, particularly elite interviews and content analysis.
  • Familiarity with quantitative research methods is a plus.
  • A proven ability to work independently.
  • A proactive attitude and a collaborative spirit.
  • Excellent proficiency in English.
