Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team in the field of affective computing. The successful candidate will work on developing data-efficient machine learning approaches for context-sensitive affect prediction.

Research Objectives

The PhD project aims to explore the context-sensitivity of data-driven approaches for affect prediction from human behavior. The research will focus on developing algorithms that can adapt to different contexts and provide reliable affect estimates across various real-world settings.

Methodology

The PhD student will develop a suitable methodology for investigating the influence of context characteristics on the generalizability and data efficiency of multimodal machine learning approaches. This may involve designing and collecting new datasets involving human participants, as well as advancing data-efficient or robust machine-learning techniques.

Requirements

To be eligible for this PhD position, the candidate should have a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field (Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Cognitive Science, etc.). The ideal candidate should have experience with machine learning/deep learning and quantitative research methods, as well as strong analytical and conceptual modeling competencies.

Working Environment

The PhD student will work within the Intelligent Systems department's Pattern Recognition and Bioinformatics group at TU Delft. The group offers a dynamic, stimulating, and diverse atmosphere, providing opportunities to collaborate with experts in the field.

Supervision

The PhD student will be advised by Dr. Bernd Dudzik (Human-oriented Machine Intelligence) and Dr. Tom Viering (Pattern Recognition).

Conditions of Employment

The PhD position is offered for a period of 4 years, with a 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year contract. The salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

The TU Delft offers a customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
