PhD Position in Bio-Inspired Safe Envelope Sensing and Upset Recovery

2 maanden geleden

Delft, Zuid-Holland, Nederland TU Delft Voltijd
Job Description

This PhD project is part of the ERC Consolidator Grant project "ARCS", which aims to develop a new paradigm in control theory: Artificial Physical Awareness (APA). APA requires the onboard autopilot to quickly detect upsets and determine optimal recovery trajectories to prevent loss-of-control. In this project, flying insects will be studied in collaboration with researchers from the University of Marseille to identify and model their sensorimotor reflexes. Experiments will be conducted to discover whether flying insects employ adaptive internal models to compensate for injuries, allowing for quick detection of, and recovery from loss-of-control. The principles behind these reflexes and adaptive internal models will be harnessed in a novel bio-inspired safe envelope detection and recovery methodology for autonomous robots, providing a bio-inspired pathway to developing the APA autopilot.

Requirements

Key qualifications include:

  • Excellent knowledge of bio-inspired robotics, biophysics, control theory, flight dynamics, and system identification
  • Excellent programming skills in C++, C, Python, and Matlab
  • Experience working with insects in laboratory conditions

Nice-to-have qualifications include:

  • Experience working with hardware such as drones
  • Experience piloting drones

As a PhD candidate at TU Delft, you will be part of a dynamic and international community of researchers and engineers. You will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project, collaborate with experts in the field, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for autonomous robots.

Conditions of Employment

As a PhD candidate, you will be employed for a 4-year period, with a 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year contract, subject to performance and progress. The salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, with a starting salary of €2770 per month in the first year and €3539 in the fourth year. You will also have access to a range of benefits, including a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution.
