PhD Researcher in Terahertz and Optical Metrology of Semiconductor Materials

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland ARCNL Voltijd
Research Opportunity

In the field of semiconductor device manufacturing, metrology tools play a crucial role in wafer alignment, overlay, and device inspection. As devices become increasingly complex, the use of stronger light sources can lead to optical damage. Catastrophic damage is easily detectable, but subtle material modifications can be challenging to observe.

Our research has shown that subtle structural changes in materials can result in changes to their optical response in the visible/near-infrared spectrum, and that terahertz (THz) radiation can provide complementary information. THz radiation is particularly sensitive to nanoscale electrical conductivity.

This project aims to utilize THz, near-infrared, and visible light to measure subtle changes in structure and conductivity induced by exposure to light pulses. The focus will be on materials relevant to the semiconductor industry and those with potential for future applications. The spatial scales of these subtle light-induced changes are determined by the pump laser exposure area, typically in the sub-micrometer to tens of micrometer range.

To achieve this, you will design and execute optical and THz experiments to measure and understand the nature of subtle material changes created by exposure to laser pulses. You will work with high-power femtosecond lasers, detectors, and diagnostic tools like SEM and AFM, and learn to analyze your data.

Requirements

You should have a MSc degree in physics, chemistry, or materials science, or equivalent, to satisfy the Dutch university requirement for a PhD program. Previous experience with lasers is not required, but it would be beneficial. An interest in non-linear optics, materials science, and chemistry is essential, as are critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. Good verbal and written communication skills in English are required.

Work Environment

The Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL) focuses on the fundamental physics and chemistry involved in current and future key technologies in nanolithography, primarily for the semiconductor industry. ARCNL is a public-private partnership between the Dutch Research Council (NWO), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the VU University Amsterdam (VU), associate partner the University of Groningen (RuG), and the semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML.

ARCNL is located at the Amsterdam Science Park, The Netherlands, and has a team of approximately 100 scientists and support staff. For more information, please visit www.arcnl.nl.

Working Conditions

The position is a full-time appointment in the service of the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for the duration of four years, with a starting salary of gross € 2,781 per month and a range of employment benefits. After successful completion of the PhD research, a PhD degree will be granted at a Dutch University. ARCNL assists new foreign PhD-students with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
