Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The successful candidate will work on two exciting projects related to optical atomic clocks.

Project 1: Design and Build a Highly Reliable Optical Lattice Clock

As a PhD researcher, you will be part of a team that will design and build a highly reliable optical lattice clock based on our AQuRA project. This project involves collaboration with our partners from VSL and VU to distribute the frequency reference of this clock through fibre links across the Netherlands and Europe.

Project 2: Create Continuously Operating Optical Clocks

You will also work on creating continuously operating optical clocks, including a superradiant clock and a zero-deadtime, multi-ensemble clock. The goal is to achieve a precision of 10^-18 in minutes, which will unlock new possibilities in fundamental science and society.

Your Profile
  • A master's degree in atomic, molecular, or optical physics, with experience in ultracold atom or trapped ion experiments.
  • Motivation to work with a dynamic and ambitious team in a challenging research field.
  • Good command of English.
Our Offer

We offer a temporary contract for 38 hours per week for a duration of 4 years. The preferred starting date is autumn-spring 2025. This should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). We will draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and international meetings. You will also assist in teaching undergraduates and master students.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 2,000 and € 3,000 (scale P). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the '30% ruling', may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
