PhD Position in Gravitational Waves Research

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research group at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, hosted at Nikhef. The successful candidate will work on a four-year project focused on cryogenic sensing and vibration isolation for gravitational wave detection.
Key Responsibilities- Investigate sensing, actuation, and seismic isolation solutions for cryogenic detectors
- Develop and implement superconducting sensing and actuation techniques
- Contribute to the development of a cryogenic and vibrationally quiet sensor test bed
- Collaborate with the ETpathfinder research facility in Maastricht to test and validate solutions
- Contribute to the Virgo detector upgrade project, possibly by designing, prototyping, and installing suspensions for new optics
- Master's degree in physics or a related field
- Proficient in English and good communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in a group/collaboration
- Skills in finite element analysis and/or superconductivity (desirable)
- A salary of € 2.770,00 (PhD) and maximum € 3.539,00 (PhD) gross per month in the fourth year, for a full-time employment
- An employment contract of initially 1 year. If there is sufficient perspective, then this will be extended to a total of 4 years. Your dissertation at the end of the fourth year forms the end of your employment contract

Our research group is part of the European Gravitational-wave Observatory (EGO) and is involved in the development of the Einstein Telescope (ET). Nikhef is a leading research institute in the Netherlands with a strong focus on particle physics and astroparticle physics. Our research group is part of the Amsterdam gravitational-wave group, which has broad expertise in (active) seismic attenuation, inertial and position sensor development, interferometer simulation, computing, and data analysis.
