PhD Position in Gravitational Waves Research

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our gravitational-wave research group at VU Amsterdam, hosted at Nikhef. The successful candidate will work on cryogenic sensing and vibration isolation solutions for the Einstein Telescope (ET) collaboration.
Key Responsibilities- Investigate sensing, actuation, and seismic isolation solutions for ET, including superconducting sensing and actuation.
- Develop and test cryogenic inertial sensing solutions for ET and the Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna (LGWA).
- Contribute to the development of a cryogenic and vibrationally quiet sensor test bed at Nikhef.
- Collaborate with the ETpathfinder research facilities in Maastricht to test solutions in a cryogenic detector environment.
- Contribute to the design, prototyping, and installation of suspensions for new optics as part of a detector upgrade for Virgo.
- A master's degree in physics or a related field.
- Proficient in English and good communication skills.
- The ability to work independently and in a group/collaboration.
- Skills in finite element analysis and/or superconductivity (desirable).
At VU Amsterdam, you will contribute to education, research, and service for a better world. We offer a salary of € 2,000 (PhD) and maximum € 3,000 (PhD) gross per month in the fourth year, for a full-time employment. We also offer attractive fringe benefits and arrangements, including a full-time 38-hour working week, 8% holiday allowance, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
