PhD Research Opportunities in ERC Funded Project on Multiple Jobholders

Faculty/Department: Faculty of Law
Education Level: Master's Degree
Position Type: Doctoral Research
Closing Date: Not specified
Vacancy Number: Not specified

The AIAS-HSI at the University of Amsterdam is seeking candidates for:

Two four-year PhD research positions within the ERC Starting Grant project titled "Moonlighting: Understanding the quality and consequences of working multiple jobs [MOONLIGHT]".

The selected PhD researchers will be integral to the innovative research initiative "Moonlighting: Understanding the quality and consequences of working multiple jobs [MOONLIGHT]", which is supported by the European Research Council (ERC).

Overview of the MOONLIGHT Project

This project aims to investigate the quality of work and overall wellbeing of individuals engaged in multiple jobholding. The nature of work in today's economy is increasingly characterized by flexibility and fragmentation. Multiple jobholders, often referred to as moonlighters, exemplify how work fragmentation impacts job quality and overall worker wellbeing. The MOONLIGHT project will analyze the quality of work across various jobs and its implications for total worker wellbeing. The research will encompass comparative studies across seven advanced economies: Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, each exhibiting varying levels of multiple jobholders and differing welfare state and labor market traditions. The research will utilize new comparative cross-national and dynamic data.

Project 1: Dire Straits

This project will examine precarious forms of moonlighting across the aforementioned seven advanced economies.

The PhD researcher will commence with a comprehensive literature review on precarious multiple jobholding, integrating labor law and policy analysis into the initial sections of their dissertation. Empirical articles will be derived from analyses of large-scale international survey data, focusing on the measurement and classification of precarious multiple jobholding, the quality of work among these individuals, their characteristics, and their contextual relationships. Key research questions include: who are the individuals combining 'bad jobs'? How stable or dynamic are the dimensions of quality and total worker wellbeing over time? The final empirical article will analyze dynamic app data to assess the stability or dynamics of quality and total worker wellbeing among precarious multiple jobholders.

Supervisors: Dr. Wieteke Conen (AIAS-HSI/ UvA), Prof. Dr. Maarten Keune (AIAS-HSI/ UvA)

Project 2: Career Pathways

This project will investigate transitions, career development, and wellbeing among multiple jobholders in the same seven advanced economies.

The PhD researcher will begin with a literature review on human capital accumulation and skills diversification among multiple jobholders, incorporating policy analysis into the initial sections of their dissertation. Empirical articles will focus on large-scale international survey data to classify work quality and wellbeing among multiple jobholders, as well as the influence of meso-level factors on prevalence, quality, and wellbeing. Research questions will explore how industries, competition, and organizations influence individuals' decisions to take on multiple jobs, and how organizations can enhance or detract from the quality of work and wellbeing of these workers. The final empirical article will analyze dynamic app data to explore the embeddedness of multiple jobholding.

Supervisors: Dr. Wieteke Conen (AIAS-HSI/ UvA), Prof. Dr. Joop Schippers (UU)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in project research group meetings;
  • Participate in training and development activities as agreed with supervisors;
