PhD Researcher in Corpus-Assisted Multimodal Argumentation with a Focus on Hate Speech

The Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen are offering a four-year studentship to complete a PhD within a joint interdisciplinary project. The proposed PhD research project will be embedded in the Department of Communication and Information Studies at the Faculty of Arts. This PhD project offers a unique opportunity to work in an international environment and to acquire valuable research experience. The project focuses on the analysis of subtle forms of hate speech through an examination of the interplay of headlines, captions, and press photos in online media communication. By combining corpus-assisted multimodality research and argumentation theory, this project aims to provide evidence on the multimodal realization of soft hate speech in online media and to offer new proposals for raising critical awareness among the general public. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a team of experienced researchers and to contribute to the development of innovative research methods. The PhD candidate is expected to conduct a total of 0.4 FTE teaching spread over the second, third, and fourth year of their appointment. The appointment will commence in February 2025 at the latest. We allow 3 months from selection in case of VISA applications. The University of Groningen strives to be a university in which students and staff are respected and feel at home, regardless of differences in background, experiences, perspectives, and identities. We believe that working on our core values of inclusion and equality are a joint responsibility and we are constructively working on creating a socially safe environment. Diversity among students and staff members enriches academic debate and contributes to the quality of our teaching and research. We therefore invite applicants from underrepresented groups in particular to apply.
