Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at TU Delft to work on a project that aims to design privacy-aware monitoring systems using mmWave radars and machine learning. The goal of this project is to create a system that monitors a given area without compromising individual privacy.

Monitoring is a critical aspect of smart homes, buildings, and cities, and it is essential to ensure that these systems are designed with privacy in mind. Current monitoring systems often rely on cameras, which can be a concern for citizens. Our project aims to investigate alternative monitoring platforms that do not provide personalized information, even if they are hacked.

We will use mmWave radars, which provide limited information, and combine them with deep learning techniques to identify events of interest. The PhD research will focus on the intersection of deep learning and embedded systems, aiming to develop a system that is accurate and works with limited computational and energy resources.

The successful candidate will spend around 80% of their time in Delft and the remaining time in Eindhoven, where Signify is located. The applicant should have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field, and a solid knowledge of embedded systems and/or deep learning.

The position demands a strong background in building new prototypes and performing experimental work. Good English language proficiency and a team player personality are essential. Prior knowledge of mmWave radars is a plus but not required.

The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with excellent supervision, academic staff, and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme aims to develop your transferable, discipline-related, and research skills.

The salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2,872,- per month in the first year to € 3,670,- in the fourth year. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service, which provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands.

Requirements
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field
  • Solid knowledge of embedded systems and/or deep learning
  • Strong background in building new prototypes and performing experimental work
  • Good English language proficiency
  • Team player personality
Conditions of Employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5-year contract with an official go/no-go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2,872,- per month in the first year to € 3,670,- in the fourth year.

As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service, which provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands.
