PhD Position in Metasurfaces for Energy-Efficient Wave-Based Computing

We are seeking a talented and motivated candidate for a PhD position in the field of metasurfaces for energy-efficient wave-based computing. As part of the Dutch consortium NL-ECO on energy-efficient computing, AMOLF is collaborating with the groups of dr. S. Rodriguez, Prof. F. Koenderink, and Prof. E. Verhagen to explore the potential of metasurfaces in realizing radical improvements in the energy efficiency of information and communication technology.
Project OverviewThe successful candidate will work on designing and optimizing metasurfaces for performing common image processing steps in the optical domain. This will involve electromagnetic design and optimization, as well as demonstrating concepts in optical experiments. The project aims to explore the limits of metasurfaces in performing complex algorithms and to develop programmable, trainable, and dynamically reconfigurable metasurfaces.
QualificationsWe seek an excellent candidate with a master's degree in physics, photonics, materials science, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have strong social, organizational, and communication skills, as well as a passion for doing experiments and theoretical work. Experience with nanofabrication and advanced optical measurement techniques is highly desirable.
Work EnvironmentThe position will be part of a collaborative effort involving the groups of dr. S. Rodriguez, Prof. F. Koenderink, and Prof. E. Verhagen. The successful candidate will have their home base in the group of dr. Said Rodriguez, but is expected to collaborate with all involved partners. AMOLF is a leading research institute in the field of nanophotonics and spectroscopy, and the successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art experimental systems and expertise.
BenefitsThe position is intended as a full-time appointment in the service of the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for the duration of four years. The starting salary is 2.781 Euros gross per month, and a range of employment benefits are available. AMOLF assists any new foreign PhD-student with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
