Your Role

As robots become more prevalent in various professional settings, our understanding of their influence on employment remains limited. While engineers are enthusiastic about creating intelligent robotic solutions aimed at enhancing efficiency in challenging or monotonous tasks, labor economists express concerns regarding potential job displacement and the diminishing significance of work. This project, funded by NWO, seeks to bridge this knowledge gap through comprehensive ethnographic investigations of service robots in action.

We are seeking a candidate for a two-year postdoctoral position, with a flexible start date to be arranged with the selected individual.

The successful candidate will engage in ethnographic research under the guidance of Dr. Anastasia V. Sergeeva, based at the KIN Center for Digital Innovation. KIN is dedicated to exploring the development, application, and economic value of innovative processes and technologies within organizations. Our research team comprises a diverse group of experts from various fields, including business administration, sociology, communication, anthropology, philosophy, engineering, and computer science. This interdisciplinary approach contributes to a burgeoning international field of study.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and execute ethnographic studies examining the development of robotics in laboratory settings and their application in real-world work environments.
  • Conduct fieldwork, perform literature reviews, author empirical research papers for academic conferences and journals, and present findings at relevant events.
  • Contribute to educational activities.
  • Collaborate with industry partners and organize workshops and symposia to disseminate research outcomes.
Candidate Profile

Qualifications

  • PhD in Business Administration, Management, Sociology, or a related social science discipline. Candidates nearing the completion of their PhD are also encouraged to apply.
  • Extensive experience with qualitative research methodologies, particularly ethnographic approaches.
  • Demonstrated academic excellence, evidenced by high-quality publications or conference presentations.
  • Strong motivation to conduct high-caliber qualitative research.
  • Ability to integrate creative and analytical thinking.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with industry stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in English is essential; knowledge of Dutch is advantageous for conducting ethnographic research among Dutch-speaking professionals.

  • A competitive salary ranging from €3,226 to €5,090 gross per month, based on a full-time commitment and dependent on qualifications and experience.
  • A minimum commitment of 0.8 FTE, with an initial contract duration of one year, with the possibility of extension.

  • A full-time 38-hour workweek with a holiday entitlement of 232 hours annually, with additional leave for those working 40 hours.
  • 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
