Cathodoluminescence Imaging Specialist for Semiconductor Analysis

Our research group is pioneering the use of high-energy electrons as effective sources for optical excitation in materials. We have developed a cutting-edge cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy technique, utilizing 1-30 keV electrons within a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to excite nanomaterials. This innovative approach allows us to achieve a remarkable spatial resolution of 5 nm and temporal resolution of 5 fs, enabling detailed investigations into excitations and localized modes of plasmons, 2D semiconductors, and various optical metamaterials.
In this project, we aim to explore the application of CL spectroscopy in SEM as a novel tool for semiconductor metrology. Our research will involve collecting angle-, polarization-, and time-resolved CL spectra from intricate nanostructures that comprise metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics. Our goal is to extract characteristic material properties and feature dimensions in three dimensions from the gathered datasets. The project encompasses studies ranging from simple model systems to sophisticated structures, such as nanosheet transistors, which are crucial for semiconductor manufacturing. We will employ tomographic techniques alongside inverse design and machine learning methodologies to assess the potential and constraints of CL in semiconductor metrology and to establish practical workflows for CL tomography.
Candidate Profile- A master's degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline is required.

AMOLF is a leading institute within NWO-I, dedicated to conducting fundamental research on the physics of complex materials and developing new functional materials in collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The Photonic Materials group, led by a distinguished professor, investigates light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Our group is part of AMOLF's Nanophotonics and Light Management research centers, which include eight research groups sharing a state-of-the-art cleanroom for nanofabrication and characterization, along with various advanced facilities.
