The Leiden Institute of Chemistry at Universiteit Leiden is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team and contribute to the development of novel antibiotics targeting the electron transport chain in Listeria monocytogenes.

We are part of the Leiden Early Drug Discovery & Development (LED3) network, a collaboration between the LIC, the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL), and the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR). Our mission is to discover new drug targets, molecules, and concepts for drug discovery.

Salary and Benefits

This 12-month position comes with a competitive salary ranging from € 27,700,- to € 35,390,- gross per year, depending on experience. The contract can be extended for three more years upon satisfactory performance. We also offer an attractive benefits package, including additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%), training and career development, and individual choices for assembling your own set of terms and conditions.

Job Description

In this PhD project, you will focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of bacterial respiration and developing novel antibiotics against Listeria monocytogenes. You will join a friendly, creative, and interdisciplinary research team that studies the molecular mechanisms of bacterial respiration and develops novel antibiotics. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing your own research programme under the guidance of your PhD supervisors and the support of the wider research group;
  • Learning and applying a range of biochemical and biophysical approaches to discover the molecular pathway of electron transfer in L. monocytogenes;
  • Selecting inhibitors against selected proteins of this pathway to validate EET as a potential antibiotic target;
  • Cloning, expressing, and purifying key proteins in the EET pathway;
  • Developing activity assays to confirm hypothesized functions in oxidoreduction and membrane transport;
  • Using single-particle cryoEM to elucidate the molecular structure, mode of action, and inhibition;
Required Skills and Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, you should have:

  • A MSc degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biophysics, or related discipline with a focus on macromolecular biochemistry;
  • Excellent proficiency in English and the ability to concisely report research progress at team meetings;
  • Experience with protein purification and characterisation;
  • Enthusiasm for working in a team;
