This PhD project aims to identify key factors influencing individuals' preferences for their living neighborhoods, taking into account the critical role of social networks. Traditional approaches often focus solely on individual characteristics and preferences, overlooking the significant impact that social connections can have on such decisions. This research seeks to address this gap by exploring how individuals' social positions within their interpersonal networks affect their susceptibility to social influence and subsequent living-arrangement decisions. Utilizing advanced network analysis techniques to assess the structures and dynamics of social networks, combined with behavioral choice models, this study aims to create an integrated modeling framework. This approach will disentangle the various triggers affecting decision-making processes. Data collection will include individual demographics, neighborhood preferences, and detailed information about interpersonal networks. The insights gained from this research will have substantial implications for urban planning, community development, and social policy, particularly in the context of housing scarcity.
Background
The research will be led by Dr. Li Zeng and Dr. Francisco Bahamonde-Birke with expertise in network analysis and machine learning, and behavioral decision-making and choice modeling, respectively. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the project, regular collaborative team meetings will ensure consistency and integration across the research lines. This project addresses the current limitations in understanding neighborhood choice by considering the influence of social networks, which has been largely neglected in previous studies. By combining network analysis and behavioral choice modeling, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors shaping neighborhood preferences. This research is particularly relevant in the context of the Netherlands' housing scarcity, where accurate insights can inform more effective and unbiased policy-making. The expected outcomes will contribute to a deeper understanding of how social influences shape individual preferences, providing valuable guidance for urban planning and social policy.
Your position
The PhD position is integral to a broader research initiative, which includes other PhD students and staff members. As a PhD candidate, your role will involve conducting research in the realm of social network analysis and behavioral choice modeling. Regular meetings with the supervisor will be scheduled to review and discuss the project's advancement. The department fosters an open working culture, emphasizing mutual respect and appreciation among its members.
Your responsibilities
Your research work includes literature reviews, developing and extending statistical methodologies, analyzing theoretical & practical properties, conducting simulations, analyzing empirical data, and writing software. You will prepare scientific articles to be published in international journals, present key findings at national and international scientific conferences, and write a dissertation. You will actively participate in the Department of Methodology and Statistics. You will contribute to Open Science and Team Science. You will contribute to education and supervision (e.g. supervising bachelor's theses and research skills groups; not more than 10% of your time will be devoted).Specifications

Your background
We are looking for a strong PhD candidate with a relevant (Research) Master's degree with a background in applied/mathematical statistics, econometrics, data science, machine learning, sociometrics, or the like, and a strong interest on behavioral modeling. In addition to your monthly salary, you will receive 41 vacation days (for a 40-hour work week), a holiday allowance (8%), and a year-end bonus (8.3%). You will be enrolled in the ABP pension fund through us. Our Options Model allows you to choose from a variety of facilities at a tax advantage.
