PhD: Economic value of sand nourishment strategies

4 maanden geleden

Amsterdam, Nederland Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Voltijd

Would you like to research the economic value of non-market benefits and conduct cost-benefit analyses? Would you like to contribute to transdisciplinary research on coastal sand nourishment? Please apply at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).

Jouw functie

We offer an exciting PhD position in a transdisciplinary research project on coastal sand nourishment strategies. As a PhD candidate, you will assess preferences of the general public for several non-market social and environmental benefits resulting from large-scale sand nourishment, and how these benefits are distributed across stakeholders. The economic viability of sand nourishment strategies in the Netherlands will be evaluated based on temporally and spatially explicit extended cost-benefit analyses (CBA) that include the elicited non-market, monetized benefits.

As a PhD, you will be involved in a new Dutch Research Council (NWO) funded project called SOURCE (Sand nOURishment strategies for sustainable Coastal Ecosystems). Coastal sand nourishments – the addition of sand to increase beach volume – are potentially a key method to sustainably adapt to accelerated sea-level rise and keep the low-lying hinterland protected. SOURCE will develop critically-needed coastal ecosystem knowledge and improve the prediction of nourishment impacts on key coastal state indicators. The project will assess the ecological impacts, and explore the potential of using nourished sand for new habitat creation. The integrated design process will develop innovative nourishment strategies, co-created with stakeholders. The project’s Living Lab is a sand nourishment along the Dutch coast, which will be designed, constructed and evaluated.

Your duties

  • you do research towards writing a PhD thesis
  • you contribute to project tasks, such as data collection, and organization of stakeholder focus groups and workshops
  • you contribute 10% of your time to teaching in IVM’s programmes
Jouw profiel
  • you have a MSc (or equivalent) in (environmental) economics
  • you possess good quantitative statistical and/or econometric skills
  • you have excellent writing and verbal communication skills in English. Proficiency in Dutch is an advantage
  • you are interested in doing cutting-edge scientific research
  • you have a proven interest in transdisciplinary work

We realise that each individual brings a unique set of skills, expertise and mindset. Therefore we are happy to invite anyone who recognises themselves in the profile to apply, even if you do not (fully) meet all the requirements.

About the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM)
Established in 1971, IVM is a leading environmental research institute that is internationally recognised for its high quality research output in a range of environmental disciplines, as well as for its interdisciplinary work. The mission of the institute is to contribute to sustainable development and care for the environment through scientific research and teaching. IVM aims to do excellent problem-oriented research that is useful to a wide range of stakeholders in the Netherlands and internationally. A unique strength of our research is to understand sustainability problems in their social and economic context. IVM’s research community works within four departments: Environmental Economics; Environmental Geography, Environmental Policy Analysis; and Water and Climate Risk. Since 2001 IVM has been part of the Faculty of Science at VU Amsterdam (legal name Stichting VU).

The department of Water and Climate Risk (WCR) studies hydrological and climate processes, and how these processes lead to risks and opportunities for society, the economy, and the environment. A defining characteristic of the department is a multi-disciplinary approach that combines expertise from natural sciences with knowledge from the fields of economics, e-Science and geography. This approach has led to a unique research portfolio of water and climate risk projects, and the department is a global leading institute in flood and drought risk assessment, and risk management research.

The department of Environmental Policy Analysis (EPA) at IVM is a team of more than 25 researchers that was evaluated in the most recent international research quality review as “world leading” and as being “one of the highest profile academic research groups involved with sustainability governance from around the world”. We address questions related to institutional effectiveness and change, governance innovation and complexity as well as learning and adaptation. Empirically, we have a strong focus on water, climate change and biodiversity.

The department of Environmental Geography (EG) conducts interdisciplinary research on the spatial aspects of environmental and social challenges and the solutions sustainable land use can provide to these.

The department of Environmental Economics (EE) leads the institute’s efforts in improving insights into the interaction between the environment and the economy. The department is one of the main groups of environmental economists in Europe, consisting of around 35 scientific staff and PhD researchers. The department strategy is to consolidate and further strengthen its position as a major player in the European field of environmental economics. Important fields of application include climate change, energy, circular economy, water, ecosystem services, and environmental and natural resource management. The philosophy of the EE department is to closely integrate its research projects with its teaching programme and to initiate and conduct research jointly with stakeholders and collaborating institutes.
