PhD in Classifying hyperkinetic movement disorders using fMRI
7 maanden geleden
PhD Opportunity: Fully-Funded 4-Year PhD in Classifying hyperkinetic movement disorders using fMRI at UMCG/University of Groningen.
Project description
Hyperkinetic movement disorders are defined as excessive involuntary movements. Tremor is the most prevalent and best-known example. Presently, classification of such hyperkinetic movement disorders is based on subjective expert assessments. This approach can be inaccurate, variable between different experts, and expensive to perform. In this context, the Next Move in Movement Disorders (NEMO) project was set up to develop novel techniques for computer-aided diagnosis of movement disorders using patient data from sources such as video, electromyography, accelerometers, and fMRI and FDG-PET brain scans.
For the current project, we are looking for a PhD candidate who will be responsible for research and development of feature selection tools and classifiers for resting state and task-fMRI data. The goal is twofold: to help us better understand the underlying brain mechanisms of the disorders and creating insightful models that help movement disorder experts in classifying these disorders. The candidate will participate in the scientific dissemination of the project’s results, via journal and conference publications. Patient selection, data collection and technical infrastructure are jointly provided to the project by the team at both UMCG and RUG.
The project pairs with a simultaneous PhD initiative concentrating on creating deep learning-based video analysis tools to identify and assess movement disorders using task-based patient videos.
As a PhD candidate, you will pioneer the integration of computational innovation into clinical application, significantly impacting medical diagnostics. This interdisciplinary role merges machine learning, neuroimaging, and clinical research for groundbreaking work in medical technology.
Work environment
You will be appointed as a PhD candidate at the Expertise Center Movement Disorders Groningen, department of Neurology, UMCG and will work in close collaboration with the department of Computer Science at the RUG. You will be part of an enthusiastic, multidisciplinary research group with different lines of research in the fields of hyperkinetic movement disorders, neuroimaging, and machine learning.
What We Offer
The opportunity to work in a leading research institute with state-of-the-art facilities. A supportive academic environment within a collaborative team that values diversity and inclusion. Access to a broad network of clinical and academic professionals at UMCG and internationally. A comprehensive PhD training program. A competitive salary and benefits package in accordance with University regulations for academic personnel. The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.
In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.
Conditions of employment
The employment contract (fulltime, 36 hours/week) is entered into for 1 year. An assessment will take place after approximately one year, after which a positive assessment will continue the employment until the end of the training, 4 years after starting date. The gross starting salary amounts to € 2.901 per month, and will increase to €3.677 in the fourth year. In addition to the salary you will receive an 8 % holiday allowance and an 8.3 % end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment are conform with CAO University Medical Centre (CAO-UMC).
