Onze organisatie:The Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA), part of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (RUAS), is a leading international academy for bachelor and master programs in media, art, design, leisure, and art education.
WdKA's mission and vision are to develop new ideas about the relevance of the artist, educator, producer, or designer and to help students become artistic professionals who will respond to tomorrow's world with critical vision, energy, and care. Our education distinguishes itself by three pillars: majors, practices, and unique stations, focused on research through making. These three pillars encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and allow our students to become proficient both in their profession and the context in which they will work.
With approximately 400 colleagues, WdKA educates approximately 1800 students.
We stand at the precipice of a transformative era, shifting from a linear, wasteful culture to a regenerative, circular, fair, inclusive, and healthy one. The very essence of product design practice, with its physical, tangible, and material nature, necessitates a re-evaluation of material choices, production techniques, systems, and values. We embark on this journey of discovery through experimentation, testing, modelmaking, and prototyping.
We aim to offer our students perspectives on a positive and meaningful future. The professional world is looking for young designers with multiple talents and skills who can help them transition towards this circular, inclusive, and regenerative future(s).
We teach students to work iteratively, developing material knowledge and technical skills, to grow their identity as designers. In combination with exploring digital fabrication and artificial intelligence, doing research, and experimenting within a theoretical framework, they become conscious of the power of their creative and strategic talents and how to apply that in practice.
The Major Product Design program is seeking a tutor for years 1, 2, and potentially 3 and 4. As a tutor, you will play a crucial role in shaping students' understanding of product design, material knowledge, construction, and production techniques, thereby contributing significantly to their academic and professional development.
In the interdisciplinary Social Practices program, students from all majors of the WdKA are introduced to discourses relevant to cultural production that investigate the commons, new forms of organization and citizenship, including care for the natural and social landscapes we inhabit. We challenge students to consider the act of making public inherent to socially engaged practice.
The Social Practices New Earth program centers climate justice, system-change and collective action in engaging with the urgencies of eco-social crises. In this subject area, we offer students inspiration and practical
strategies for how artists, designers and cultural workers can contribute to repairing and regenerating an unjust, damaged, but not yet broken planet. Students are invited to engage with and enact concepts such as reciprocity, multi-species community and intergenerational care as they co-create and reclaim the future.
Social Practices New Earth is seeking a tutor who can teach from an introductory to an in-depth perspective across all study years.
It is not possible to apply for a specific year.
Wat ga je doen?
You will be teaching and guiding the students in their development. This implies you will have the following tasks:
Preparing classes and teaching, as part of a project-team, in courses ranging from the first year to the fourth. Participating in the development of curriculum and classes for the program. Participating in assessments, both in the context of classes you are teaching, and in stand-alone assessment moments (both formative as summative). Responding with flexibility to a workload that varies over the course of the academic year.
Wat we jou bieden:
Hogeschool Rotterdam offers a temporary employment contract (D4 cao hbo) of one year. Depending on experience, the salary amounts to a minimum of € 3.896,33 and a maximum of € 5.936,77 gross per month (scale 11 cao hbo) for full-time employment, excluding vacation allowance and year-end bonus.
WdKA likes to invest in motivated and well-trained employees. Working at WdKA means that you can use time and facilities (via unlimited access to our Stations) for professionalization. To further your pedagogical development, you need to be willing to undertake pedagogical courses i.e. BKE (Basis Kwalificatie Examinering) and Competency Assessment Course.

We are looking for practitioners who want to share their expertise with the next generation, professionals who are excited to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team within a project-based education. A shared belief in WdKA’s aim to question established practices through design and develop new pathways is pivotal.
Previous experience in (art/design) education is a pro, but we encourage very motivated creatives with an active (product) design practice and diverse backgrounds and talents to apply.
We’re searching for enthusiastic and thoughtful teachers who are interested in helping our programs to stay ahead of the developments in the field. Who deeply understand that the paradoxes within the paradigm of circularity and solutionism are at the heart of art & design education today. The ideal candidates will desire to grow in the position and take an active role in program development. They are keen to develop their educational practice alongside an existing professional design practice.
Next to this, we ask:
Actively working as an independent or employed (product) designer, with insights into and vision of (product) design practices. (Hands-on) Knowledge and skills about production techniques and materials (metal, wood, ceramics, bio-based, fabrics, etc.). Knowledge about digital fabrication, digital visualization, and presentation. Knowledge on climate justice, system-change (imagining climate futures, speculative worldmaking, Anthropocene ecologies) A master's degree, favorably in design or a relevant program. Familiarity and an ability to engage with design and applied art communities is a significant asset. A commitment to developing new didactic forms of design education within the bachelor program is an asset. EU/ECC work authorisation A good command of verbal and written English & Dutch
