Background Information
The group Sensors Mechanics is part of the cluster Mechanical Development and is responsible for the design of opto-mechanical modules, like light sources and optical modules for scanner alignment and level sensor. A returning challenge for every optical design is choice whether to glue or mechanically clamp optical fibers. At ASML the use of special fibers and UV light, high pulse energy or high-power lasers increasingly descoping the use of glue and push for the need for mechanical solutions. Especially clamping of single mode fibers and Photonic Chrystal Fibers are sensitive to stress that can cause mode distortion, polarization loss and birefringence.
Your Assignment
As an intern your assignment focuses on the investigation and testing of various mechanical clamping solutions in its impact on the optical performance of optical fibers. The assignment consists of:
A theoretical analyses and experiments of impact of different V-groove designs, materials, dimensions, and fibers on optical performance. Optical table test set up is available. Analyzing and testing the impact of different clamping forces, force vectors and friction on optical performance. Optical table test set up is available. Reporting test results and underpin with theoretical analysis. Defining recommendations for fiber clamping designs. Analyzing and testing the impact of operational heat loads on fiber clamping on optical performance. Reporting finding of tests and investigations, interpret the results and give recommendations for improvements or suggestions for further investigation. Designing additional mechanical set-up features required to conduct the described activities.
Your Profile
To be the perfect match for this internship, you: Are a Master student in Mechanical engineering or related. Have experience with opto-mechanical designs. Have interest in laser and fiber technology. Are solution-oriented self-motivated? Have a proactive and hands-on mentality. Have strong English communication skills (verbal and written)This is a Master graduation/apprenticeship internship for 5-9 months, for 5 days per week. Start date can be discussed.
