Rigid Packaging Technology - AD & IS team has this problem to solve:
Circular economy - Design for re-use. Material suitability for re-use applications, e.g. stadium cups, to-go coffee cups, looking at use conditions and washing cycles.
JOB PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Changing EU regulations are dictating the re-use of e.g. coffee cups at offices [1] over single-use alternatives. This change requires a redesign of plastic drinking cups, typically to a more sturdy design. Although the design aspect plays an important role, it is also very important to understand the material behavior under changing re-use conditions. For a re-use coffee cup, it means being able to contain a hot beverage and on top of that being suited for dishwasher cleaning.
Evaluation of re-use concepts for drinking cups show the sustainability position increases when the cups are being re-used more often. In this project, the focus lies in understanding the mechanisms that determine how many times a plastic cup can be washed and re-used.
The research project scope starts with a literature study to identify key materials used, designs and washing processes (home and industrial). This will lead to the development of an experimental study, where the influence of the repetitive washing and use step will be simulated to evaluate the application (and material) performance.
The data analysis and result reporting should aim towards distinguishing the impact of the use and washing conditions on several materials in SABIC’s portfolio for re-use applications. Listing different materials, designs and washing processes side by side for comparison.
The main tasks could include
Literature study to identify the key material properties, the suitable material characterization, processing, testing, and washing methods for re-use applications. Experimental study to understand the correlation between material characteristics and re-use performance. For example Material characterization, for example GPC, DSC, DMA, etc. Part processing, for example injection molding and thermoforming. Mechanical testing, for example top load and impact performance, etc. Washing processes, focusing on temperatures during washing cycles and detergents used Experimental study to evaluate the re-use cup performance by Material selection / additive modification Material blending / compounding Processing / design optimization (optional) Data analysis and results reportingREQUIREMENTS
Bachelor and/or Master and/or Technical Degree Equivalent - Polymer/Material science, Chemical / Mechanical engineering Must currently be a student at Registered Educational Establishment in The Netherlands and willing to work on-site STC-Geleen Knowledge of Office, Word, Excel etc Hands on person with willingness to work in Multi Cultural Environment Strong analytical and problem solving skills Flexible, creative and independent Good laboratory skills with strong Chemistry background Knowledge of chromatography and mass spectrometry Good interpersonal skills Ability to organize, prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously Good verbal and written English communication skillsThe Location of this internship is STC-Geleen, The Netherlands.
