Job description

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive demyelinating disease of the central nervous system characterized by neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Current disease-modifying therapies are non-curative and do not reverse progression. MS lesion progression is prevented by remyelination, a natural regeneration process after demyelination that is crucial for functional recovery and neuronal survival. Astrocytes are early and active players in lesion progression, playing both beneficial and detrimental roles in remyelination. In this project, iPSC-derived astrocytes will be used to reveal whether injury-naïve MS astrocytes functionally differ from injury-naïve normal and MS sibling astrocytes, including their response to (inflammatory) factors present in MS lesions, and how this may affect (re)myelination. You will learn a wide array of techniques, such as human iPSC-derived glial and neuron cultures, morphometrics, RNA-sequencing analysis, proteomics, CRISPRa/i, and confocal microscopy. This fundamental project will contribute to a better understanding of MS and the identified astrocyte-specific targets offer the opportunity to develop novel therapeutic strategies to overcome remyelination failure in MS. The position is funded by Nationaal MS Fonds.

Working environment

The research at the) at the UMC Groningen focusses on understanding basic functions and processes of cells and tissues and how they lead to diseases if disturbed. The Dept. BMS strives to identify potential mechanisms and targets to prevent or cure disease, and to promote Healthy Aging. The position is also embedded in the .
