Artificial Intelligence (AI) contributes to many applications across various facets of life. The surge in connected devices, machinery, and IoT sensors pumps out massive data streams. Despite having speedy networks, data transfer to centralized facilities for analysis often faces hurdles, calling for substantial power consumption. The key to tackling this energy-heavy connectivity challenge lies in crafting smart hardware for edge-computing systems, enabling decentralized data processing near devices, machinery, or IoT sensors. In this vein, the NWO IMAGINE project ventures to devise an innovative CMOS-compatible energy-efficient framework tailored for vision edge-AI applications. The project entails co-developing device technology, analog and digital electronic circuitries, algorithms, and systems to fuel applications ranging from reactive systems to autonomous driving and industrial inspections. IMAGINE stands as a collaboration between the University of Twente, Eindhoven University of Technology, Toyota, and IMEC.

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to join our team for a PhD position in the Computer Architecture for Embedded Systems group. Your tasks will revolve around delving into research touching on computer architecture, memory subsystems design, FPGA-based acceleration, and deep learning.

Your Profile

  • You are a dedicated and enthusiastic researcher
  • You hold a master's degree in computer engineering, embedded systems, or computer science
  • You possess a solid grasp of C, C++, and Python (preferably in a Linux environment)
  • You have hands-on experience in FPGA design utilizing hardware description languages and/or high-level synthesis (VHDL, Verilog, Vitis HLS, Vitis), and are well-versed in programming FPGA boards
  • You are well acquainted with machine learning and deep learning, with prior exposure to AI/ML frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch
  • You are proficient in English
